Pattaasu time!
Pattaasu = fire crackers
I'm not talking about Diwali here. Everyone knows about Diwali. It is one of my favourite festivals ever. If you don't know, please find out about it from another source. It is very interesting. What i do mean to write about is the anticipated billion wala in our parliament.
How would it be if Mukesh Ambani, the richest Indian (according to Forbes in 2010) were to donate his entire wealth for the good of the nation?
The exchequer would earn 27 billion dollars!
1 US dollar = 44.2252 INR (as of 11/2/2010)
so that makes it a whopping 1194.0804 billion rupees!
Now, i've noticed that we Indians are more comfortable dealing with lakhs and crores rather than millions and billions.
1194.0804 billion rupees = 1194.0804*100 = 119408.04 crore rupees !!!
That is one lakh nineteen thousand four hundred and eight crore rupees!
Do you even realize how much that is???
Here is how a few standard numbers look against it :
10 -> ten
100 -> hundred
1000 -> thousand
100000 -> lakh
10000000 -> crore
1194080400000 -> This is the kind of number we are looking at.
It has 5 digits more than a crore, and trust me it is HUGE.
Up until now, i've just been trying to get you acquainted with big numbers.
If you haven't already heard about the dubious 2G spectrum allocation scam, PLEASE WAKE UP! Go look it up in the news papers, check out the articles on the internet. The TV news channels are always talking about it. Seriously, where have you been?? If you thought the way our Commonwealth Games was organised was shameful, wait till you hear about the 2G scam.
The short story :
"There once lived a man called Raja. He joined a party (political ofcourse) and due to a feud in the party patriarch's family, he got lucky and got to sit on a VERY golden egg. The Telecom egg. The thing was....the egg was of no use to him by itself. It was meant for the greater good. Now, he was either a fool or a villain because, rather than hatch it, he sold that egg to a few people for a paltry sum and denied India's billion people its wondrous benefits"
The egg was worth 1.7 lakh crore rupees (rounded lower)
1700000000000 -> It is a 3rd more than Mukesh Ambani's entire worth.
Our 2010-2011 budget plan :
School education = 31036 crore rupees
Rural development = 66100 crore rupees
Agriculture ministry = 11880 crore rupees
scam = 5.5 times our budget for Indian school education
scam = 2.6 times our budget for rural development
scam = 14.3 times our budget for the agriculture ministry
The way i see it.....looks like someone is going to be very lonely and without support in the near future. No one is going to want to be associated with him because that would mean political suicide. Well, it can't ALL have been due to this one man. A certain party had better catch the entire team behind him or face the public wrath next time around. This has got to be one of the worst cases of corruption in the history of the world. The only bright spark that i can predict for Mr.Raja is a possible inclusion in the Guinness books. And on a final note, here's to the billion wala in the parliament. No way the BJP, the Left and the other parties are going to let go of their delightful Diwali gift.
